From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 5, 1988:

• Many Kansas University basketball fans slept in this morning, or showed up at their morning duties in an unusually bleary-eyed condition, after an impromptu city-wide party that had begun seconds after 10:09 p.m. when Kansas delivered an 83-79 defeat to the Oklahoma Sooners in Kansas City’s Kemper Arena. Jayhawk Boulevard and the streets of downtown were filled until at least 3:30 a.m. with screaming, yelling, horn-honking, high-fiving fans as cached fireworks from the Fourth of July burst into color over the city. KU police estimated that more than 30,000 fans celebrated on Mount Oread alone. Police and medical personnel remained busy all night, and cleanup crews went into action early this morning to tidy up and repair damages from overzealous fans.
• Danny Manning had greeted reporters in verse after his 31-point, 18-rebound game: “To all the people who said it couldn’t be done … we’re national champions, we’re No. 1…. how do you like us now?” “Danny was a skinny kid the last time we played in the Final Four,” said Kansas coach Larry Brown, referring to the KU loss to Duke in the 1986 semifinals. “He was a man tonight.”
