From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 4, 1988:

• Oklahoma was favored by eight points in tonight’s final game of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, but everyone from Gov. Mike Hayden to the faculty of Kansas University to the fans predicted that the Jayhawks would prevail. The governor, saying that it was “Kansas’ year in basketball,” went so far as to draft a document proclaiming today as “Kansas Jayhawks Basketball Day,” which he planned to sign this afternoon, well in advance of the game’s tipoff time of 8:12 p.m. Store shelves in Lawrence were bare of KU souvenirs and clothing, with local merchants reporting that the past week’s sales had been like “a second Christmas.”
• The local referendum coming up at the April 19 election was to address not only teacher salaries. If approved, the measure would also add nurses, counselors, and elementary school librarians to the staffs of public schools. Employees presently in these positions said today that additional support in such services was badly needed.
