40 years ago: Stolen wallet results in mistaken identity

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 1, 1973:

  • A Kansas University student in Lawrence was a victim of mistaken identity this week. An unknown man who had been serving a jail sentence in Los Angeles for marijuana smuggling had been carrying the identification of KU student Augustus diZerega VI, who had lost his wallet about two and a half years earlier. The situation had been discovered when a probation officer had made a routine phone call to the student’s father in Wichita. Officials said that the records would be corrected to clear diZerega’s name. The student advised anyone losing their wallet to inform the authorities immediately. “You never know what it can lead to,” he said.
  • Local Cub Scouts Brian Van Schmus, Chris Brady, and Ronnie Ousdahl, members of Pack 3057, were pictured on the front page this morning as they prepared for their Pinewood Derby race this afternoon at the Community Building.
