One person injured in one car accident, driver flees scene

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical attempts to extract an accident victim from after a one vehicle car wreck at the intersection of 15th and Pennsylvania Streets that occurred around 1 a.m. Saturday morning.

A 21-year-old woman was injured in a one-vehicle accident early Saturday morning at the intersection of 15th and Pennsylvania streets.

At 1:05 a.m., Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical responded to the accident and found a gray Dodge minivan half off the ground after running into a tree.

Lawrence Police Capt. Bill Cory said he thought the vehicle had run the intersection’s stop sign and kept going across the intersection before a collision with a tree in an adjacent lot stopped it.

The driver, a 28-year-old Lawrence women, fled the scene on foot, leaving a passenger in the backseat suffering from nonlife-threatening injuries to her lower body.

Emergency crews spent nearly half an hour extricating the accident victim from the vehicle. The victim was transported by helicopter to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.

Police later arrested the driver on charges of leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an injury accident, driving with a suspended license and possession of a controlled substance.
