Two Lawrence men charged with sex crimes

Two Lawrence men were formally charged Monday with sex crimes in Douglas County District Court.

Here’s a recap of the cases:

• A 44-year-old man was charged with three counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. According to prosecutors, the alleged crimes took place between May and July. The investigation was handled by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and the man — already in jail on a DUI conviction — was served an arrest warrant Friday. Bond was set at $50,000. If convicted, the man faces up to 12 years in prison on each charge.

• A 31-year-old man was charged with attempted rape and criminal restraint. According to police, the alleged crime took place Aug. 20 at a central Lawrence residence and the victim was an acquaintance of the suspect. The man was arrested Friday. In court, prosecutors alleged the man got on top of a woman, choked her and attempted to rape her. Prosecutors asked for, and were granted, a request for a $100,000 bond, based primarily on the suspect’s undocumented immigrant status. The man could face up to 20 years in prison on the charges.

The Journal-World does not typically name sex-crime suspects unless they’re convicted.
