A 34-year-old Tonganoxie woman has been found guilty of three counts of animal cruelty in Leavenworth County District Court. Sarah Hoppins, 34, was found guilty of the charges Friday after judge Gunnar Sundby heard from witnesses for the defense.

The case was continued from Sept. 4 when Sundby heard from the prosecution.

The Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office started an investigation in June after residents noticed three dogs were left with no food or water at Hoppins’ residence. Deputies found that two of the dogs were chained up and none of the dogs had food or water, Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said. Outside temperatures were 98 degrees with a heat index of 105. The area to which the two chained dogs were confined also was littered with feces. The dogs were taken to animal control, where they were evaluated and found to be underweight and infected with parasites. The dogs received veterinary care and were placed with animal control.

Sentencing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26.
