Kids Voting is seeking 300 volunteers to staff 50 polling sites on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 6. Kids Voting is a grass-roots, nonpartisan, nationwide organization dedicated to educating youths in grades kindergarten through 12 about the rights, responsibilities and mechanics of participating in American democracy. Kids Voting started in Douglas County in 1992. Kids will literally go to the polls on Election Day and cast their ballots. Volunteers will help kids sign in when they arrive, give them their special ballots and assist them with voting. Shifts are available early morning, late afternoon or evening; two volunteers (ages 16 and up) are needed for each shift.

Sign-up is quick and easy this year. Go to www.VolunteerDouglasCounty.org, click “Find a Volunteer Opportunity” and then scroll down until you see the Kids Voting logo; from there, you’ll be able to view all of the polling sites and volunteer shifts and sign up in seconds.

• Dogtoberfest is in need of numerous volunteers to help with its event Sunday, Oct. 7, in South Park. Dogtoberfest is a dog festival that started two years ago to raise money and awareness for the Lawrence Humane Society and Lawrence Community Shelter. Volunteers are needed throughout the day for a variety of tasks, including overseeing activities, working the registration table, event setup, supervising the kids activities, assistance with dog photos and much more. • Lawrence Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build Committee is in need of volunteers for its upcoming Women Build Luncheon on Friday, Oct. 12, at Maceli’s, 1031 N.H. The Women Build Luncheon provides support for a home built primarily by women for family partner Kamari Logan and her two daughters. The luncheon’s main feature is a live auction where guests can bid on materials needed to build the house, and there will also be a silent auction component with wares from local businesses that guests can bid on as well. Volunteers are needed to help set up the event, run the live auction, serve food to guests and clean up after the event. Do your part to help make this fun-filled event a success. • The Recovery and Hope Network (RAHN) still needs several volunteers to help run its funnel cake booth for the remaining weekends of the Renaissance Festival. RAHN is the only funnel cake provider at the festival, and proceeds go to support programs for people living with and recovering from severe mental illness in Douglas County. Several volunteers are needed for shifts every Saturday and Sunday through Oct. 14. Rides are available from Lawrence to the Renaissance Festival if needed; three shifts are available each day. Costumes are encouraged for volunteers working the counter, and no open-toed shoes or sandals are allowed. All volunteers must be 15 or older, and each volunteer will receive two free tickets to the Renaissance Festival to use any other day.
