“Treme” (9 p.m. Sunday, HBO) returns for a third season of overlapping personal tales of New Orleans residents and exiles, folks still reeling from Hurricane Katrina and still deeply defined by their affections for their flawed, wounded city. They include an overeager DJ and music enthusiast (Steve Zahn), who leads pathetic walking tours of the city’s jazz historical sites and stoically faces the scorn of jaded foreign tourists who are aghast that a city and a nation could allow the birthplace of a culture to be turned into a parking lot or a Laundromat. On the other side of the equation, some Crescent City exiles express joy and relief to be far from their hometown of “drunks and dreamers.” The truth about life in New Orleans lies somewhere between these two extremes, and “Treme” continues to search for it in an entertaining, beautifully shot, well-acted and meandering fashion.

• Dramas like “Treme” demonstrate weekly how the best on television is often equal to or superior to anything Hollywood has to offer on the big screen. But no one will ever accuse the Emmy Awards (7 p.m. Sunday, ABC) of being more important than the Oscars. That’s strange, considering that people are generally more familiar with the material honored at the Emmys than the Oscars, which often rewards more obscure films of artistic merit. Perhaps familiarity breeds contempt.
