From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 21, 1987:

• An amended complaint was filed today raising the charges against a Lawrence man from second-degree murder to first-degree murder. A preliminary hearing for Carl L. Kemp, 40, had been scheduled to start today, but it had been postponed at the request of his attorney after the amended complaint had been filed in Douglas County District Court by D.A. Jim Flory. Kemp had been charged Sept. 11, two days after officers had found his wife’s body in a box in a shed near the couple’s mobile home at 101 Michigan.
• A new report out of Washington, D.C., showed that more than 7 million Americans were being monitored at work by some form of computerized surveillance. After the report was released by the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, a California congressman objected to the invasions of privacy made possible by new technology. “Every day we are seeing new invasions,” said Rep. Don Edwards, a California Democrat. “People should not be forced to surrender their privacy and dignity when they go to work.”
