From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 18, 1912:

• “Kansas University opened its forty-seventh year this morning when the deans of the various schools and assistants took possession of the Robinson Gymnasium and the work of enrolling students for the year began in earnest…. There was a grand rush of business up on the hill all day and it was estimated that a record in the way of enrollments would be established today.”
• “There may be Professional Racers here for the fair if a purse sufficiently large can be raised. The Fair Association have agreed to contribute half the amount if the Automobile Club will put u the other. It has been the plan so far to have Friday the 27th set aside as automobile day and to have a parade and racing in the afternoon.”
• “Tomorrow is the birthday of the Lawrence Railway and Light company. And it is a lively youngster for three years. Three years ago tomorrow the first cars moved down Massachusetts street and an electric railway was a reality in Lawrence. Since then the company has grown steadily until now it is one of the big institutions of Lawrence.”
• “Two Kansas University sororities are entering elegant new homes this fall, the Kappa Alpha Theta and the Kappa Kappa Gamma. Both of these sororities have erected new houses during the summer and both of them are proud of their new homes which are valuable additions to the fraternity properties in the city of Lawrence. The Theta house was completed the first of September and the girls took possession immediately upon returning to Lawrence this fall, and are now enjoying the pleasures of their new home. The house is located at number 1116 Indiana street. It is a frame structure, three stories, and built after the colonial style which is so popular among builders of the present day. Inside it is finished in oak throughout. The girls declare that they have the finest house in town barring none…. The Kappas also have a handsome new home which they expect to occupy soon. It is located just beneath the University hill and on the site of old Fort Thatcher. It is a pretty location for a home and the girls are congratulating themselves on having secured it.”
