25 years ago: Local student channels Ben Franklin in prize-winning essay

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 17, 1987:

  • Lawrence ninth-grader Cathleen Carothers, 14, had placed first in a local contest with her paper “A Letter to The Editor, Sept. 17, 1787, from Benjamin Franklin.” Carothers, a West Junior High student, had written her paper after imagining how Franklin would have tried to convince people to support the U.S. Constitution. The annual “American History Essay Contest” was sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
  • A letter from the Kansas State Historical Society to Lawrence officials stated that the Douglas County Bank’s expansion plans would not damage historic Old West Lawrence. Many OWL residents earlier this year had opposed the rezoning of several lots in the 800 block between Kentucky and Tennessee and the razing of eight old houses on the site.
