Kansas University professor of music Steven Spooner is set to release an ambitious five-CD set of 16 piano recitals explores centuries of keyboard music, from the 18th century to today.

Spooner will hold a release party to celebrate the CD set “The Historical Piano Recital Series” at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Spencer Museum of Art. It is free and open to the public, and includes a ‘mini concert’ from Spooner.

A live concert film called “Aspects of Liszt” is being released in tandem with the CD set, the final volume of which consists solely of works by Hungarian composer Franz Liszt. It was recorded using one of Liszt’s own pianos, an 1886 Bechstein concert grand piano, which is on permanent display at the Spencer Museum.

The film was recorded in front of live audience at a Liszt Bicentennial performance in 2011, and includes specially commissioned work by Arab-American composer Mohammed Fairouz.

Spooner has recently performed at Carnegie Hall, Santa Cecilia in Rome and Singapore’s Esplanade.
