It’s progressed from teaching painting over the airwaves to being a major player in Kansas media.

At 1:15 p.m. on Sept. 15, 1952, KANU went on the air for the first time. Now Kansas Public Radio, it’s been on air since. The station’s licence has always been owned by Kansas University and in 1971, the station became part of the original network of National Public Radio affiliates.

Throughout the year, KPR will have special events celebrating its diamond anniversary. At 2 p.m. Saturday, they’ll broadcast a special concert by “Jazz Scene” host David Basse on 91.5 FM in Lawrence. More information about anniversary events can be found at http://bit.ly/Qpi7ZW.

KPR hosts and staff say the station’s longevity is due to lasting support.

“We’ve come an awful long way in 60 years — that’s due in large part to our audience,” media manager Phil Wilke said. “We look forward to the next 60.”
