25 years ago: YSI complex officially opened, but still much work to do

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 12, 1987:

  • The School of Engineering at Kansas University was reporting a decrease in the number of female students. According to KU engineering Dean Carl Locke, the decrease at KU was not yet substantial, but it had surpassed the national rate and was a matter of concern. “We’re missing a talent pool…. We need more of them going on, particularly for their Ph.D.,” Locke said, adding that the engineering school also had no female faculty.
  • A new youth sports complex at the southwest corner of Wakarusa Drive and Clinton Parkway had celebrated its official opening this past weekend. The opening of seven soccer fields and two football fields marked the halfway point to completion of the $450,000 complex, which was funded entirely by private donations. The complex, reserved for exclusive use of the youth of Douglas County, was to be run by Youth Sports Inc., a nonprofit corporation dedicated to children’s athletics.
