From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 10, 1987:

• A dozen or more private planes were to be available for passengers at the Art from the Air Extravaganza on Sept. 20. Members of the public would be charged $7 for a 15 to 20 minute ride over the “Sunflower Still Life” field sculpture by Lawrence artist Stan Herd. People awaiting their turn were to be treated to entertainment from a local jazz band and from the Ric Averill Players, who were presenting a play about Amelia Earhart.
• Early numbers showed 7,967 students enrolled in Lawrence public schools for the 1987-88 school year. The figure was very close to the 7,964 that had been projected by U.S.D. 497 officials for budget purposes. The largest enrollment increase was at South Junior High, where principal P. Kay Duncan said that halls were noticeably more crowded and classes were all meeting or exceeding their ideal maximum numbers.
