From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 7, 1987:

• For the second time in two years, student enrollment at Kansas University was expected to increase by about 1,000 students. In spite of this, KU had no plans to construct any residence halls similar in size to the halls on Daisy Hill. “The only plans for any additional housing is the possibility that we will build two additional scholarship halls as a result of ‘Campaign Kansas,'” said David Ambler, KU’s vice chancellor for student affairs.
• Montgomery County, Kansas, officials were offering for sale the 226-foot bridge crossing the Verdigris River southeast of Coffeyville. Federal law required the county to attempt to preserve the 116-year-old bridge before replacing it, but there wasn’t much left of the structure after a bonfire three years earlier had destroyed its wooden planks, leaving only the two spans in the frame. At one time the bridge had connected Coffeyville with Parker, a city that had died off in the 1870s.
