From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 4, 1987:

• Lawrence Fire Chief Jim McSwain announced today that all 39 residential fraternities and sororities at Kansas University were going to have to make changes to come into compliance with fire codes this year. The changes, McSwain said, would involve many aspects of construction ranging from installation of smoke detectors to enclosing of stairwells. “We’re not naive; we know that some of the changes require a considerable amount of money,” McSwain said. He pointed out, however, that there had been six fires at KU’s fraternity and sorority houses during the past decade.
• Residents of the new Colony Woods Apartments, one of the city’s largest complexes, were having a parking problem. Due to space problems, residents of the complex at 1301 W. 24th had been double-parking, crowding alongside driveways, and parking in the grass. The complex, which had opened this summer, had already exceeded by 23 spaces the city’s minimum requirement, but the requirements may have not taken into account just how many individual residents would own cars. An expanded parking lot was expected to open today to help relieve the congestion, but officials said that the situation could be a symptom of a citywide parking disease.
