40 years ago: Pool unlikely to reopen as planned for Labor Day

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 2, 1972:

  • Fans of television-watching or of curling up with a good book might have greeted the holiday weekend weather with equanimity, but for those who had expected to indulge in some outdoor recreation, Labor Day was starting off as a disappointment. However, the cool, cloudy weather was not expected to deter thousands of visitors who were braving the rainy forecast as they traveled to Perry Lake, Lone Star Lake, or Douglas County State Lake. The Lawrence municipal swimming pool, which had been scheduled to reopen today for the weekend, was not expected to open unless skies cleared and temperatures reached at least into the 70s.
  • Local music lovers were excited to hear that Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles were both scheduled to appear in a homecoming concert in Allen Fieldhouse sponsored by the Kansas University Student Union Activities on Oct. 28.
