From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 31, 1972:

• Lawrence children were looking forward to a night of trick-or-treating in spite of the scary forecast. A chilly and perhaps wet Halloween was on tap for northeast Kansas, and even colder temperatures were expected as a front was on its way into the area. For tonight, law enforcement officials were reminding drivers to be careful of young goblins who would be wandering the streets. Lawrence police chief Richard Stanwix invited area children to visit Lawrence police and fire stations where treats would be distributed. The East Lawrence Center, 10th and Delaware, was also planning a party for the youngsters.
• Rains and wet fields were also slowing down harvesting operations in the area. The grain sorghum harvest was moving slowly, with only 38 percent of the crop out of the fields, compared to 70 percent the year before. Corn had been 55 percent picked by last weekend, compared to 72 percent last year.
