Austin, Texas ? Kansas University’s men’s cross country team placed fourth Saturday at the Big 12 Championships, totaling 121 points for its highest conference finish since 2006.

The KU women had 173 points to finish seventh.

Oklahoma State won the men’s meet, and Iowa State claimed the women’s championship.

Led by sophomore Evan Landes, KU’s men placed all seven of its scoring runners in the top 35 of the 8K race.

Landes placed 17th in 24:27. Senior Donny Wasinger took 21st in 24:34, making him a top-40 finisher in each of his four conference championship races. Sophomore Reid Buchanan was 25th in 24:40, and sophomore James Wilson 30th in 24:50.

Senior Josh Baden (24:53) and junior Josh Munsch (24:57) were 33rd and 34th, respectively, and freshman Gabe Gonzalez (24:58) was 35th.

“I thought the men performed really well today,” KU coach Stanley Redwine said. “It was great to see how they competed together. When one started falling back another picked it up and really kept the team going. We’re very excited about the fourth-place finish.”

Senior Kyra Kilwein led the KU women, placing 21st in 6K race in 21:40. Freshman Hannah Richardson took 24th in 21:41, senior Kathleen Thompson was 42nd in 22:16, senior Tessa Turcotte 43rd in 22:16, junior Natalie Becker 60th in 22:53, sophomore Liza Tauscher 63rd in 23:04 and senior Devin Wiegers 64th in 23:08.

Kansas will compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional on Nov. 9 in Springfield, Mo.

“The guys have a really good chance to make it to the NCAA,” Redwine said, “and for the girls to do it they will need to do something special. So we’re looking for both teams to step up and hopefully make to the NCAAs.”
