From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 26, 1972:

• The legendary symbol of Kansas University, the Jayhawk, was celebrating its 60th birthday this year, and some celebratory events were planned for Homecoming this weekend, including a birthday party at the halftime of Saturday’s football game against Iowa State. This weekend also marked the first birthday of what the newspaper referred to as “the baby Jayhawk that hatched at homecoming last year.”
• A total of 33,530 voters were registered in Douglas County as of today, reported county clerk Delbert Mathia. The total reflected an increase of more than 7,000 voters in the last 2 1/5 months. A breakdown by precinct was not yet available, but it was expected that the areas with heavy student populations would show substantial increases.
• KU associate professor of law Malcolm Wheeler had been injured the previous afternoon during an intramural football game. Wheeler had suffered head and facial injuries from striking his head on a goal post, security officers said.
