25 years ago: Youth ranch gets new barn

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 26, 1987:

  • A new barn had been constructed last week at the O’Connell Youth Ranch east of Lawrence. The structure, which was to replace the barn destroyed by fire about two months ago, had been paid for by an insurance settlement, and donations from local people were to cover the interior work, said administrator Al Negen. He added that the boys who lived at the ranch were to plan and carry out the inside finishing work this week, including building stalls and a tack room.
  • Art Linkletter was scheduled to be in Lawrence this week to dedicate the new Charter Counseling Cneter of Lawrence, 3210 Mesa Way. Linkletter had been a spokesman against drug abuse since 1969 when his daughter Diane, 19, had died in a drug-related accident.
