Cardona lone Jayhawk left at ITA regional tennis championship

? Kansas University’s Maria Jose Cardona picked up two wins in her first singles action to stay alive at the ITA Regional tennis championships on Friday at the University of Tulsa.

Cardona beat Nebraska’s Makie Zeppernick, 7-6 (6), 6-1 before advancing to the round of 16 with a three-set win over Arkansas’ Sarah McClean, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. Cardona will face Wichita State’s Lucia Kovalova today.

Maria Belen Ludueña won her opening match against Nebraska’s Izabella Zgierska, 6-1, 6-0, before exiting on a 6-2, 7-6 (5) loss to Oklahoma’s Whitney Ritchie. Ludueña and Cardona were also knocked out of the tournament in the second round of doubles play, losing 8-5 to Oklahoma State’s top-seeded pair, Kanyapat Narrattana and Malika Rose. Ludueña and Cardona defeated Wichita State’s Rebecca Pedrazzi and Carla Venticinque, 8-1, in the first round.

KU’s Monica Pezzotti lost both singles matches Friday, 6-2, 6-0, to Saint Louis’ Steff Hollis and 6-0, 6-1, to Iowa’s Shelby Talcott.
