From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 18, 1987:

• Doctors were working to reattach the left forearm of a 21-year-old Kansas University student who had been injured in a recent motorcycle accident. The student, a junior from Hutchinson, had been briefly chased on his motorcycle by a KU police officer for drag racing on 15th Street shortly before the accident had occurred. According to a witness, the man and another motorcyclist had been traveling at high speeds before his 1987 Honda Hurricane had struck a car at 15th and Westbrooke. (A follow-up article on a later day revealed the good news that the man’s arm had been successfully reattached during a 12-hour operation at the KU Medical center.)
• Linda Herbel had been named principal at Lawrence’s newest school, Quail Run Elementary, which was scheduled to open for the 1988-89 school year. “The opportunity to start a new program doesn’t come around often. In Lawrence there’s a new school built about every 20 years,” Herbel said.
