Free State football drops to No. 2

Despite a 43-point home victory over Kansas City, Kan., Wyandotte on Friday, Free State High’s football team lost its No. 1 spot in the latest Class 6A Kansas Football Media Poll rankings, released on Wednesday.

The Firebirds (6-1) dropped to No. 2 in this week’s poll, getting supplanted by new No. 1 Hutchinson (5-2). Hutchinson’s losses came against Kansas City, Mo., Rockhurst and Salina South. FSHS lost to Olathe South.

No. 3 Derby (6-1), No. 4 Shawnee Mission East (6-1) and No. 5 Wichita Heights (6-1) rounded out this week’s top five.

Lawrence (6-1), Topeka (6-1) and Shawnee Mission West (6-1) also received votes.

In the Super 10 rankings, which include teams from all classes, Free State in No. 4 and Lawrence is No. 9.

Class 5A Bishop Carroll (7-0) occupies the No. 1 spot in the Super 10, followed by No. 2 Hutchinson and No. 3 Salina South (6-1, 5A).
