40 years ago: Thousands cheer young Elton John at KU concert

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 15, 1972:

  • Nearly 10,000 people had packed Allen Fieldhouse on a recent Friday night to hear Elton John singing and playing his old and new tunes for over two hours. According to an article in today’s Journal-World, some of the 25-year-old performer’s music, “hard to classify but somewhere between teeny bopper music and hard acid rock,” had been “’68 vintage from his second album, and some of it, from Honky Chateau, his latest.”
  • In the week just ended, 11 non-traffic and 81 traffic convictions had been entered in Lawrence Municipal Court, including seven jail sentences, all of which had been suspended. Six persons had been convicted of petty larceny, and one of “temporarily depriving an owner of his property,” which charge the court clerks described as similar to petty larceny. In all, $845 had been assessed for non-traffic convictions.
