Prairie Village ? Carrie Howland and Grace Bartle took first and second, respectively, in the vault, and the Free State High gymnastics team repeated as Sunflower League champions on Saturday at Olathe East.

The Firebirds, who were without injured senior Jackie Zaitz, edged out host O-East by less than a point, combining for a score of 104.575 to the Hawks’ 103.775. Lawrence High placed ninth with 94.525 points.

Sophomores Howland and Bartle were major contributors on the day for FSHS, racking up top-five finishes in several events. Bartle also took second in floor and third in the all-around, while Howland placed fifth in both floor and beam. Senior Annie Soderberg had the Firebirds’ other top finish — second place in beam.

Junior Jessie Abernathy led the Lions with third place in floor.

Free State will look to repeat as state champions when both squads compete Saturday at the state tournament, hosted by Lawrence High.
