25 years ago: Kansas Lottery ready to launch in one month

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 12, 1987:

  • State lottery director Larry Montgomery announced today that Kansas Lottery tickets would go on sale starting Nov. 12, more than a month after the rough target date of Oct. 1 that the agency had been quoting previously. Montgomery had said earlier that the first game would be an instant-win scratch-off ticket game at $1 per ticket and that the state would later progress to “computerized” games. Lottery spokesperson Nancy Zogleman said today that the agency had approved more than 2,800 licenses for retailers to sell tickets, with several hundred more expected.
  • Bruce Beresford, Lecompton Township, reported today that he had dug up an 8 1/2- pound yam from his garden after the frost a week earlier. Beresford, a retired professor of horticulture from the University of Minnesota, said that he had planted it from a cutting on May 1.
