Mobile phone apps launched for LJWorld.com website

Fans of LJWorld.com now have two new mobile phone apps to choose from to stay up-to-date on local news, sports and weather.

Officials with The World Company, the parent company of LJWorld.com and the Journal-World, announced they have released both iPhone and Android mobile phone apps for the LJWorld.com site.

“We really want to be audience first,” said Mark Potts, The World Company’s vice president of content. “That means reaching our audiences every way we can, not just in print, but also on the Web and now mobile so when you are out on your phone you can find out what is going on.”

The applications, which allow mobile phone users to access virtually all the new information posted on LJWorld.com, are being offered free-of-charge to consumers. The iPhone app is available at Apple’s App Store, and the Android application is available at Google Play.

In addition to local news and sports, the applications also will provide up-to-date weather information through a partnership with Weather Underground, said Barry Smith, brand marketing manager for The World Company.

“We definitely understand people want information quickly and on-the-go,” Smith said.

The new apps are the first mobile applications offered for the LJWorld.com site. They are in addition to an iPhone app released earlier this year for The World Company’s KUsports.com website.

Bill Fowle, director of digital operations for The World Company, said the KUsports.com app had been downloaded more than 12,000 times, and users of LJWorld.com had begun asking for more mobile functions.

The new apps will allow users to access the latest headlines, sports, weather and entertainment news. Fowle also said the applications will provide a sampling of the more recent photos and videos from the LJWorld.com site.

“As with most apps and technology, both our apps are evolving, and we welcome feedback on what users would like to see us build into future versions,” Fowle said.
