Man faces charges after police chase

A 24-year-old Meriden man was charged Tuesday in Douglas County District Court with 10 crimes, including aggravated assault, a third offense of driving while intoxicated, marijuana and methamphetamine possession, fleeing law enforcement, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Joshua Kane Matthews is accused of refusing to stop for law enforcement about 7 a.m. Saturday near Sixth and Michigan streets. During a low-speed chase, police spike strips flattened three of the vehicle’s four tires, but Matthews’ vehicle continued traveling at a speed between 10 and 20 mph. The vehicle stopped after colliding with a patrol car near Sixth Street and Kasold Drive.

Officers had to break the vehicle window open to apprehend Matthews, according to police.

Bond for Matthews, who has been convicted twice before for drunken driving in Kansas, was set at $15,000.
