FSHS golf qualifies 3 for state

? Free State High’s girls golf team won’t be sending all of its golfers to state after finishing fourth at a Class 6A regional tournament Monday at Cypress Ridge Golf Course, but three Firebirds kept their seasons alive as individual state qualifiers.

The five lowest scores from golfers who aren’t on the state-qualifying teams also earn a state bid. FSHS sophomore Emily Bermel took fourth place, with an 86 at the par-71 course. She will be joined at the 6A state tournament in Wichita next Monday by sophomore teammates Karen Campbell (112) and Michaela Miller (116).

“They have one more week to play and maybe score a little better next week,” FSHS coach Craig Hershiser said.

Regional champion Washburn Rural (338), runner-up Manhattan (360) and third-place Derby (420) secured the team bids at the regional, where Free State (435) finished fourth.
