25 years ago: Downtown parking meters to be covered until Christmas

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 25, 1987:

  • The Lawrence City Commission this week unanimously approved an annual request from the Downtown Lawrence Association to place hoods over all downtown parking meters during the Christmas shopping seasons. The meters were to be covered from Thanksgiving to Dec. 25, and cars were to be permitted to park in the hooded spaces for free for two hours. The DLA was planning to pay the city $4,000, which came from donations from downtown merchants, to make up for the lost revenue from the meters.
  • First-graders from East Heights School, dressed as turkeys with paper grocery sacks for their bodies, beaked masks, and feathers, presented “Holiday Letters” to their families this week. According to the production, the “N” in “Thanksgiving” stands for “Never do we have enough dressing;” “H” stands for “Hurry I’m hungry, we say,” “V” was for “Vegetables, we eat them we try,” and “I” stood for “Ice cream on top of the pie.” After the presentation, everyone ate soup and cornbread that the children had helped prepare.
