From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 24, 1972:

• Farmers across the Midwest had buried their hopes for a good year as weeks of rain and snow had bogged down harvest of cash crops. The United States Department of Agriculture had estimated that November’s corn crop would be 5.4 billion bushels, a 3 percent increase over 1971; their estimates for soybean yield was 1.35 billion bushels, a 15 percent increase. However, the best-laid plans and estimates had been washed out by fall rains that dumped higher-than-average amounts on the area since Oct. 1, making access to the soggy fields all but impossible.
• Fluorescent lights in the new Lawrence Public Library were being investigated by an electrician after a loud humming or buzzing noise had been reported. Head librarian Wayne Mayo said that the buzz was “pretty loud” but that in the large main reading room it was difficult to locate the precise source of the noise.
