100 years ago: Downtown store advertises its hats, gloves for men

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 24, 1912:

[Advertisement] “Don’t Overlook Your Winter Hat – Along with your new Thanksgiving suit don’t forget that you really ought to get a new hat too, for if there is any combination that causes its wearer to look like a relic of a lost race, ’tis the gladsome suit and the sad and weary top piece. – The combination, like dill pickles and strawberry ice cream, does not ‘jibe.’ – And if there is any particular time of the year when things should ‘jibe,’ certainly it’s the time of the frolicking feast of Thanksgiving. Suppose you spend a minute or two of your time looking thru the snappy, splendid specials we are now showing in hats. ‘Twill be time well spent. – A full showing of the many correct shapes, in scratch-ups, velours, stitched bodies and English Felts. – Colors to match your suits…. And for the days that are cooler, — the ones that bring the freezing crimp and ear-biting breeze, we’re showing a bunch of caps that acknowledge no other association of headgear as their equal. The shapes are those worn by men who care, come in the lighter and darker colors and are made with or without protection for the ears — The styles are brisk, snappy and full of swing, and the prices don’t cause a panic of the pocket book. 75c to $1.50 the cap…. Our dress gloves are guaranteed not to rip. – Absolutely, definitely and unequivocably. – No strings attached to the guarantee whatever, – if they rip, bring them back and we’re glad to pass out a new pair to you in their place without the charge of a single centime to you. And they’re cut over clever, up-to-now lines that make them fit the hand perfectly and become to their wearer ‘a thing of joy and beauty forever.’ The season’s shades in leathers,- also full dress. Very ‘pat’ for Xmas gifts for men. The prices are right – $1.00 to $2.00 the pair. WINEY AND ARNOLD Clothing, Furnishings, Shoes. 815 Mass. St., Lawrence, Kans.”
