Lawrence man in custody after car chase; officers find pipe bomb in vehicle

The Lawrence police department took a Lawrence man in custody after finding a pipe bomb in his vehicle when they searched it after a short car chase.

Lawrence police Sgt. Damon Thomas said around 11:30 p.m. a police officer tried to pull over a Toyota near the intersection of Clinton Parkway and Inverness Drive for a traffic violation.

The driver refused to stop and led officers on a short chase before bailing out of his vehicle near the intersection of Wakarusa Drive and Clinton Parkway. He then fled on foot, and police officers located a gun that they believe he discarded during the chase.

Officers searched the man’s vehicle and found a pipe bomb on the console.

Police officers later located the man, described as a white male with a short haircut, near the corner of Ninth and Mississippi Streets and took him into custody around 1 a.m.

As of 1:22 a.m. Sgt. Thomas said officers were still questioning the man.
