25 years ago: LMH to begin offering pediatric daycare services

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 22, 1987:

  • The TLC program at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, which had been providing day care for sick children of LMH employees for the past year, was opening to the public on Nov. 30. Working parents who were pre-registered with the hospital could bring their children with colds or other minor illnesses to the LMH pediatrics department with one hour’s notice. For working parents unable to make other arrangements, TLC filled a gap, as regular day care centers could not assume care for children who were running a temperature. The cost for the basic TLC service was $3 an hour, plus $1.50 for a meal and any special services.
  • The Lawrence Holiday Bureau was reporting that 270 families had already sought assistance for this year. The bureau, formed in 1959, tried to make sure that each family that applied was “adopted” or at least was provided with food for a Christmas dinner and at least one gift. The Salvation Army in Lawrence also reported having received requests for help, with at least 125 families having applied there.
