40 years ago: Area at 31st and Iowa to be included within city limits

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 21, 1972:

  • The agenda for an upcoming City Commission meeting included items such as the discussion of a sidewalk proposal for the area bounded by 19th, Louisiana, 23rd, and Iowa streets; water line installation on 15th Street west of Kasold; consideration of an ordinance to include within the city limits approximately 4,011 acres at the southwest corner of 31st and Iowa; and consideration of a proclamation of “Beat Missouri Week” in Lawrence.
  • The proposed Elizabeth M. Watkins Community Museum was to the the main subject for discussion at the annual meeting of the Douglas County Historical Society next week. A review of the history of the old Watkins bank building was to be given before plans were to be discussed for the financing of the museum project.
  • The overheating of a tea kettle had caused firefighters to respond to a call to 1644 W. 20th. No fire occurred, but the department had been called because of the smoke and odor.
