From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 17, 1987:

• Although temperatures were expected to dip into the 20s tonight, the homeless people of Lawrence could look forward to sleeping in a warm place as the Salvation Army shelter was scheduled to open at 9:00 tonight. “It’s supposed to be really cold tonight. I would expect 15 to 20 people,” said Lt. David Jones. “We have lots of people every day ask when we will be open.” He added that the shelter had accommodated 18 to 23 people each night the previous winter, but he believed there were more homeless people this year.
• The new Wakarusa Drive was scheduled to open to traffic after a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday of the following week. The two-mile-long, four-lane road was already open to local traffic and was completely paved, but “road closed” areas that were still partially blocking access would remain in place until the official opening.
