The second candidate announced for the vacant dean position at the Kansas University School of Engineering will visit the KU campus next week.

On Friday KU announced Amr Elnashai, a professor and head of the civil and environmental engineering department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as the next candidate for the job to visit campus. He’ll take part in a public forum from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday in the KU Visitor’s Center auditorium.

Elnashai has been a faculty member at Illinois since 2001, before which he was on the faculty at Imperial College in London since 1985. He also earned a doctorate and master’s degree from Imperial College. He received his bachelor’s degree from Cairo University in Egypt.

He is also the former director of the National Science Foundation’s Mid-America Earthquake Center.

The first engineering dean candidate announced, Michael Branicky, visited campus this week.

Branicky, a professor and chairman of the electrical engineering and computer science department at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, took part in a public forum Thursday. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Case Western, as well as a doctorate from MIT.

Branicky has also done robotics work for the National Science Foundation and co-founded a software startup.

Two more candidates for the engineering dean job, whose names have not yet been announced, are scheduled to take part in public forums on Nov. 29 and Dec. 5. According to releases, KU will release their names about two days before their arrival.
