25 years ago: Debate arises over new apartment complex plans

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 16, 1987:

  • Plans to build an apartment complex and small dormitory at Ninth Street and Emery Road were drawing complaints from a neighbor of the site. A letter from William Mitchell had been included in a recent staff report to the city commission, raising concerns about parking and traffic around the site of the proposed Mt. Ross Apartments, to be located on the site of the old Theta Chi fraternity house. The developer was planning to build 18 four-plexes as well as to convert an existing building into a small dormitory that would house up to 56 people.
  • Walnut growers and gatherers were looking forward to one of the biggest harvests in local history this year. Max Laptad, who grew walnuts just north of Lawrence, said that he had already processed 48 tons of the crop.
