40 years ago: Residents argue fate of Mud Creek

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 10, 1972:

  • The Mud Creek area was very much in the local news these days. About 230 people had attended a three-hour public hearing this week at Grant School to discuss the “channelizing” plan for 4.7 miles of the stream that flowed north and east of North Lawrence. Those opposing the proposal to channelize, or ditch, the stream said that it was environmentally damaging; they preferred to leave the stream bed untouched and build a levee along the ridge line. Others, mainly North Lawrence residents, urged officials to get on with the original plan for flood protection.
  • Wet weather had been hampering fall harvest operations in the Lawrence area for the past week, with additional rainfall of nearly half an inch aggravating the problem of already-soggy fields filled with grain waiting to be harvested. However, skies were expected to clear this weekend with warming temperatures nearing 60 degrees.
