From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Nov. 6, 1972:

All indications were pointing to a record Kansas turnout of voters tomorrow, with a new batch of young people between the ages of 18 and 21 who had recently gained the right to vote. Secretary of State Elwill Shanahan was predicting upward of 1.1 million Kansans turning out to vote on issues from the presidency to a revision of the state constitution. All state polls were pointing to a Nixon landslide in Kansas of about 300,000 votes “Only the most rabid McGovern supporters see any hopes for the Democratic challenger to claim the state’s electoral votes,” said an AP article in today’s Journal-World. A turnout of almost 90 percent of Douglas County’s 33,530 registered voters was expected tomorrow by election observers. Delbert Mathia, county election officer, said he “would not be surprised if the final figure approaches 30,000.”
