From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 31, 1972:

A front-page photo of a young woman holding a white cat with an unusual litter was accompanied by this caption: “No one has the heart to tell Sugar, the white mother cat, that those six baby skunks aren’t really hers. But it apparently makes no difference to Sugar, who mothers the skunks as if they were her own. The skunks were found by a Lawrence High student and turned over to the biology class. LHS sophomore Teresa Fraser, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Fraser, 336 Elm, agreed to take the babies home to see if they would be accepted by her cat, Sugar, who had just lost her entire litter except one white kitten. Sugar immediately accepted the babies. Because she can’t adequately feed a litter of seven, all are bottle fed once a day. Once they are older, the skunks will be returned to the instructor, who will decide what is to be done with the little creatures, now several weeks old.”
