From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 29, 1972:

• Graduating senior Rick Hird and Kansas Gov. Robert Docking both spoke at the 98th Lawrence High School commencement, where diplomas were awarded to just under 500 students in Allen Fieldhouse. About 8,000 friends and relatives of the graduates listened while Docking, who had graduated from LHS in 1943, urged the class of ’72 to become involved by becoming familiar with the workings of government and the channels through which change could be implemented. The leaders of tomorrow, he said, would not be those “who throw childish temper tantrums if they don’t get their way,” but those “who learn the nuts and bolts of their society.” Docking also encouraged cooperation between generations, saying that each could learn from and benefit the other.
• Turnout for the 1972 opening of the Lawrence municipal pool had been slightly below expectations due to weather that “wasn’t too suitable,” according to pool manager Bob Lockwood. However, the 400 Saturday attendees and the 300 who had shown up on Sunday had apparently enjoyed themselves in spite of the threat of rain.
• The long exile of the Duke of Windsor, the former King Edward VIII, was to end this week when his body was flown home for burial on the grounds of Windsor Castle. The former king, who abdicated the British throne in 1936 in order to marry American divorcee Mrs. Simpson, had died at his home in Paris after a long period of failing health.
