Baldwin boys, girls second at 4A state

? Baldwin High added three more gold medals to its list of achievements at Saturday’s state track and field championships, and the Bulldogs’ individual performances paid off in the team standings.

The BHS girls, last year’s Class 4A state champions, took second at this year’s meet with 49 points. The boys also placed second with 47 points.

Junior Dayton Valentine won the team’s only individual gold medal, in the discus with a throw of 166-1. It was his second gold medal in two days; he won the shot put Friday.

The Bulldog relay teams earned a pair of first-place finishes. The 4×800-meter team of senior Carol Whaley, senior Elizabeth Sigvaldson, sophomore Hannah Hutton and junior Kaitlyn Barnes won in 9:38.28. Whaley, Sigvaldson and Hutton then teamed with junior Glenn Kelley McCabe to win the 4×400-meter race with a time of 4:03.36.

The Baldwin boys group of sophomore Chad Berg, senior Tosh Mihesuah, freshman Joel Halford and senior Asher Hannon took second in the 4×400 in 3:26.33.

De Soto junior Angel Vasquez won his second 4A state title of the meet in distance competition. After winning Friday’s 3,200, Vasquez won Saturday’s 1,600 in 4:24.26.

Other area medalists were Mill Valley (5A) senior Ashton Proctor, who took second in the 400 (50.27), and Wellsville (3A) senior Logan O’Dea, who took third in the discus (156-4).
