A Lawrence native made a splash this week at the Jacksonville (Fla.) Jazz Piano Competition.

Addison Frei, 20, took first place in the Thursday night competition, which kicked off the three-day Jacksonville Jazz Festival. With the win came a $2,000 prize and an opportunity to play the festival’s main stage over the weekend, Frei said.

Frei, the youngest of five budding pianists featured in Thursday’s competition, graduated from Lawrence High School in 2010 and is now a student at the University of North Texas. His website is addisonfrei.com.

At Thursday’s competition, The Florida Times-Union reported, Frei impressed the judges with three varied pieces: Hank Mobley’s upbeat “This I Dig of You,” a “melancholy-tinged” original composition entitled “Horizon Arisen” and “It Never Entered My Mind,” by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart.
