From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 26, 1987:

• Organizers were hoping for a large turnout for tonight’s non-alcoholic graduation party. Only 63 advance tickets to the party had been sold to Lawrence High School’s 540 graduating seniors, but Karen Heeb, co-chairman of a parents’ planning committee, said that as few as 38 advance tickets had been sold in past years with 400 to 450 seniors turning up at the party. The party was to take place at Gammons following the LHS commencement ceremony at Memorial Stadium. (In case of rain, the ceremony was to move indoors to Allen Fieldhouse.)
• Two of Wichita’s most active Civil War aficionados were to spend three days at Cape Hatteras, N.C., as part of a research project that was studying the rusting wreckage of the USS Monitor, which was under 230 feet of seawater after having sunk more than a century earlier. After the famous battle between the ironclads Monitor and Merrimack (renamed the CSS Virginia when serving the Confederacy) had ended in a draw, the Monitor had struggled in a heavy storm before sinking on Dec. 31, 1862. The exact site of the wreck had been unconfirmed until 1974, and a National Marine Sanctuary now protected its resting place.
