Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson said Friday his office was reviewing allegations that security alarm system door-to-door solicitors recently in Lawrence were operating contrary to state law.

Branson said prosecutors had received information that solicitors said to be representing Devcon Security were claiming to be with a resident’s current security company to try to gain access inside people’s homes. Once they get inside, the solicitors change their sales pitch to try to sell residents a new system.

Lawrence police said they have received about a dozen similar complaints in the past week.

City officials said last week that Pinnacle Security of Utah, which shares an owner with Devcon, had applied for 23 soliciting licenses. Pinnacle Security settled a lawsuit in Missouri in 2011 that alleged Pinnacle induced consumers to buy security systems by misrepresenting they were associated with the consumer’s current alarm company and that homeowners would receive free services when they were not.

Branson said consumers should be aware they can cancel door-to-door transactions at any time prior to midnight of the third business day after signing the agreement. He said residents with concerns should call police at 785-832-7509 or his office’s consumer protection unit at 785-330-2849 to file a formal complaint.
