Friends and family still looking for missing Lawrence man

Lawrence police and friends and family of Yelekal Alemu, the 23-year-old former Kansas University student who has been reported missing, are still searching for him Tuesday and asking anyone with any information about his whereabouts to come forward.

The body of 23-year-old Lawrence man Yelekal Alemu, known as Kal, was discovered east of Lawrence on May 31, 2012. Alemu, a former Kansas University student, was reported missing about three weeks earlier. No foul play is suspected in his death.

Alemu, who goes by the name Kal, was last seen Saturday morning and later failed to turn up to an important family gathering. Police officers found his car that night on private property in rural Douglas County southeast of Lawrence.

Zachary Luea, an attorney assisting Alemu’s family, said Tuesday that police had brought in a canine unit to search the area around the car, which was not damaged. As of Tuesday night, Luea did not know if the search unit had found anything. He said that the search was still active and that the family was “hoping for the best.”

Friends, family and roommates are continuing to put up photos of Alemu and trying to encourage anyone who has seen him or has any information to call the police department at 785-832-7509 or the Douglas County Crime Stoppers hotline at 843-TIPS (8477). Calls to the hotline can be made anonymously.
