40 years ago: Gaslight Tavern case goes to court in June

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 7, 1972:

  • A trial date of June 13 had been set in the Douglas County District Court for the case of the state against the Gaslight Tavern, 1241 Oread. County Attorney Mike Elwell and Kansas Atty. Gen. Vern Miller had filed a civil action against the Gaslight in October 1971, seeking to designate it as a common nuisance and to have it closed, alleging drug and narcotics violations.
  • An explosion heard on a recent Friday afternoon near 17th and Illinois had been caused by a tree limb which had brushed against a Kansas Power and Light Co. line, causing the wires to arc and a line fuse to blow.
